What are Black Soldier Fly Larvae?

Black Soldier Flies (Hermetia illucens) are a small, black fly that is often mistaken for a wasp. They are common in Australian gardens and their larvae are beneficial for compost piles.

By processing food waste, BSFL reduce landfill and the greenhouse gases it produces. BSFL are a potential solution to the problems of industrial food waste, and the increasing need for high-quality, environmentally-friendly protein sources for animal feed.

How to use Farmhouse Pet Treats Chook Bugs!

Farmhouse Pet Treats Chook Bugs! for other pets

Bugs! can be used as a treat or training reward for birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, and small mammals. For species such as reptiles and fish, they may be suitable as a main source of food.

Feeding Farmhouse Pet Treats Chook Bugs! to native animals

Wild birds and lizards also love Chook Bugs!. Insects are a natural food source for wildlife so it is safe to give to them. Farmhouse Pet Treats Chook Bugs! are a much better option than feeding wildlife unsuitable foods like bread, mince, or other human food.

Farmhouse Pet Treats Chook Bugs! can be used to attract more native animals to your back yard. You can scatter Bugs! on a bird feeder, or on the ground for lizards. You will have to be patient and wait for your local animals to discover the treat. But once they do, they will quickly become regular visitors to your yard!

Make sure you:

  • Provide clean, fresh water like a bird bath or a shallow dish
  • Feed somewhere safe from cats and dogs
  • Remove any uneaten food
  • Clean dishes and water sources regularly

Do not give more food than they will eat in 10 minutes, and don’t feed every day. Feeding once or twice a week is best.
